Why Did Joseph Run Away Instead of Giving In? How Godly Restraint Saves Men From False Charges & Ruined Lives (Genesis 39:12)
In a frivolous culture, people laugh at a man who turns down easy compromise or walks away from a fast woman. They call him scared or 'holier-than-thou.' Look at Joseph in Genesis 39:7–12: when Potiphar's wife grabbed his garment, Joseph didn't stay in the room trying to debate her or prove how tough he was—he left his coat in her hand and ran out the door. Why? Because he feared God ('How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?') and he knew the trap. People can laugh and joke all they want when you walk away, but the man who listens to God's restraint doesn't wake up with a destroyed name or a life-ruining charge—while the guys who refused to restrain themselves get caught in the exact snare you walked away from.
1. Not 'Holier-Than-Thou'—Just Smart Enough to See the Risk (Proverbs 22:3)
Proverbs 22:3 says, 'A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.' Exercising restraint with certain people and situations isn't acting superior to everybody else. It is recognizing that not every smile has good intentions toward you, and some setups are designed to take your freedom, your family, and your testimony.
2. Let Them Laugh Today—Your Name Will Still Be Clean Tomorrow (Genesis 39:12)
When you refuse to sleep around or cross a line, the crowd might mock you in the moment. Yet time always exposes the truth: the same chaotic people who tried to pull you in end up putting accusations and ruin on the next man who had no restraint, while your conscience and your record before God remain clean.
3. Giving Credit Where It Belongs: The Lord Kept Me
Any man who has walked through the real world knows he could have easily been caught in those exact situations if left to his own flesh. When you look back and see the traps you didn't step into, you don't brag on yourself—you thank the Lord who knew you, gave you restraint in that second, and kept you from destroying your life.
